Biomedical Optics

Biomedical optics, a multidisciplinary field at the intersection of engineering, physics, and medicine, has emerged as a cornerstone of modern healthcare. This cutting-edge discipline leverages the unique properties of light to drive transformative advancements across various domains of healthcare, including diagnostics, therapeutics, and patient monitoring. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), for instance, offers real-time visualization of tissue microstructure with micron-scale resolution, facilitating early detection of pathological changes in conditions such as retinal diseases and cancer. In the realm of therapeutics, biomedical optics encompasses innovative approaches such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), which harnesses the selective absorption of light by photosensitive agents to induce localized cell death in diseased tissues. PDT has shown promise in the treatment of various cancers, macular degeneration, and other medical conditions, offering minimally invasive alternatives to conventional surgical interventions. Biomedical optics plays a pivotal role in continuous monitoring of physiological parameters and treatment responses as well. Optical spectroscopy techniques, including diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy, allow for real-time assessment of tissue oxygenation, metabolic activity, and drug distribution within the body. These monitoring tools are invaluable in guiding treatment decisions and optimizing patient outcomes.

Key topics to be covered in this special session include:

  • Optical imaging techniques for early disease detection
  • Optical spectroscopy for real-time monitoring of physiological parameters
  • Photodynamic therapy, Photobiomodulation and other laser-based treatments
  • Optical coherence tomography for non-invasive imaging of tissues
  • Wearable and implantable optical devices for personalized healthcare

We invite researchers, clinicians, engineers, and industry professionals working in the field of biomedical optics to submit their papers and join us for insightful discussions and knowledge sharing.
