Due to their ability to deal with large amounts of complex and large data, artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning and deep learning have a significant impact on real-world problem solving. Medical applications of artificial intelligence have also been successful. There is a particularly active area of research involving the use of medical data for artificial intelligence-based clinical decision making, diagnostic studies, medical knowledge engineering, and natural language processing in medicine. Medical image data acquired via MRI, tomography, X-rays, pathology, microscopy, and breast computer-aided design (CAD) for use in diagnostic-oriented studies, such as those examining various types of human brain disorders and cancer (i.e., breast cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer). Despite numerous published examples of successful outcomes, machine learning and deep learning for medical data are a current hot topic due to their use in numerous experiments.

This special session will bring together recent research on artificial intelligence in medicine. A special emphasis is placed on groundbreaking research in the following areas:

  • Artificial intelligence-based clinical decision making.
  • Applications of deep learning in healthcare.
  • Applications of machine learning in healthcare.
  • Engineering of medical knowledge
  • Systems that are based on knowledge or on agents.
  • Biomedical and clinical applications of computational intelligence
  • Information systems in healthcare and medicine that are intelligent and process aware.
  • Medical applications of natural language processing
  • Biomedical decision support via data analytics and mining.
